Deficiencies in proper calcium and phosphorus intake have become a cause for concern in modern equine management due to the domestication of equines. Genetically, the equine population is predisposed to adaptation of nutrient uptake through the choosing of natural forages and minerals within their environment to manage deficiencies that affect a range of biological necessities and overall health. Due to the localization necessary in the use of equines for work and pleasure, many of these nutrient variations may be lacking that were once addressed by natural migratory patterns. Nutritionists have, for the most part, addressed the deficiencies in specific regions in order to adapt to these changes. However, there are multiple variables, which cannot be addressed in standardized feed and forage supplementation.

Calcium ratios is one of the major oversights in the proper intake of calcium in the horse’s diet; that despite our best efforts, have been overlooked and may require supplementation. Managing these deficiencies has led to vital research in skeletal development of both companion and competitive animals as it relates to the intake of calcium and precursors to optimal skeletal development. The optimal ratio for calcium and a calcium phosphate in equine forage is three parts calcium to one part calcium phosphorus, also known as calcium di-phosphate. Once an imbalance occurs on either side of the spectrum, the body will compensate by removing necessary components from the skeletal system in order to reach homeostasis. As a result, skeletal calcium, copper, zinc and magnesium are cannibalized from the existing bone to insure proper circulatory homeostasis for muscle and organ function. This leaching of skeletal minerals can lead to thinning of bone and lack of skeletal and hoof integrity under stress. When addressing this homeostasis through a dietary blend of three parts calcium citrate to one part calcium di-phosphate, we are able to exclude skeletal leaching from the herd animals and help minimize the negative effects. This problem is the reason we developed the HOOF and BONE formulation.

As a result our our research, we have compensated the dietary necessity of the equine with the proper ratio of a 3 to 1 formulary consisting of 3 parts of the most highly absorbable calcium in the form of Calcium Citrate with one part Calcium Di-phosphate to prevent further the leaching of calcium from the skeletal system that also leads to the loss of vital minerals such as copper, zinc, and magnesium; all of which are vital for the development of the hoof wall as well. 

Another vital component is the biocatalyst Biotin that is crucial for the development of the key structural component of the hoof: Keratin. Without proper supplementation or the availability of Biotin in the natural environment, an absence of Biotin can result in an unhealthy development of the hoof wall and proper development can be compromised. In other words, the lack of these components in the equine diet can have a cascading effect and can lead to health problems.
